Since its founding in 1949, the Leister Group has transformed from a small family business into a global leader. What began in the basement of Karl Leister's parents' house in Solingen, Germany, has grown into the internationally renowned Leister Group, employing 1,000 people, with 13 subsidiaries across 10 countries, and an export share of 98%.

As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we reflect on a history defined by pioneering spirit, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to operational excellence.

The Beginnings: From Basement to Global Market

The story of the Leister Group began modestly but with great vision. Karl Leister quickly recognized the potential of heating devices and invented the first double-insulated handheld vacuum cleaner, the Leister FIX W 200. These products were in high demand in post-war Germany and laid the groundwork for the company's early success. However, the major breakthrough came in 1954 with the development of the Leister Kombi, the world’s first electric plastic welding tool. This innovation was immediately exported to European countries and Australia, marking the beginning of Leister's success story in thermoplastic welding equipment.

Growth and Internationalization

In the 1960s, during the golden age of plastics, the demand for welding equipment surged. Simultaneously, new export markets were emerging, which necessitated the establishment of an additional production facility in an EFTA country. In 1963, the company “Karl Leister Elektro–Gerätebau“ was founded in Kägiswil, Obwalden, Switzerland. This strategic decision proved groundbreaking and eventually led to the closure of the original Solingen site in 1977. From that point on, Leister became a fully Swiss company.

First Diversification

The first diversification occurred in the 1960s, marking a significant milestone in our history. From that point forward, hot air technology was used not only for plastic welding but also for process heat in industrial applications. The initial products included air heaters and high-pressure blowers. Over the years, the company steadily expanded its product portfolio. Today, the Leister Group offers a wide range of products, from plastic welding devices to hot air and infrared modules for industrial process heat, as well as micro-optics components and gas sensors.

A Future Full of Opportunities

The history of the Leister Group is not only a story of growth but also one of transformation. In 1993, Christiane Leister took over the business as part of a succession plan. At that time, the company faced a major challenge: addressing the space constraints at the Kägiswil site. With the support of the authorities in Obwalden, Leister was able to secure land in Sarnen, allowing for the construction of a new facility. This expansion provided the necessary space for further growth and diversification into emerging, future-oriented technologies. The company’s entry into microtechnology, the construction of cleanrooms, and the founding of AXETRIS marked the beginning of a new era.

From a Sole Proprietorship to a Corporate Structure

The increasing complexity of diversified business activities, workforce growth, and market expansion abroad, along with the establishment of subsidiaries on three continents, called for a new organizational structure. In response, the Leister Group was reorganized in 2011 into its current form — a globally operating corporate group that sets benchmarks in its markets.
